How to Take Care for Yourself When in Grief

For the many clients we have served as a provider of hospice palliative care in Humble, Texas, we have seen how grief can lead to neglect of self-care on the part of the surviving loved ones. The loss of a loved one can be very emotionally heartbreaking that they would prefer to linger on the feeling even more. This helps them to feel even closer to their departed loved ones.

However, while we recognize that this phase can happen, it needs not to be prolonged. Yes, we can cry and lock ourselves in the room for days. However, our lives ahead of us continue. There are still day-to-day activities that we need to accomplish.

As a trusted provider of hospice care in Texas, we recognize how grief can be really emotionally devastating. However, we would like to uplift you in the knowledge that grief can be managed in a healthy way when we find proactive ways to care for ourselves. Here are some of our recommendations.

  • Go to Sleep
    The emotional turmoil we go through as we grieve can lead to further stress on our bodies. For this, we need to rest and sleep. When we make time for sleep, we are also helping our mind to process the situation better so that we can reach acceptance sooner. As a result, you can better respond to other challenging situations that can come your way even while the grief is still there.
  • Eat Healthy
    Remember to feed your body with healthy food, especially of fruits and vegetables. Our burst of emotions in grief can result to physical tension, which causes our body to work more than usual. This can leave us hungry and wanting to eat even unhealthy food choices. Be intentional in eating healthier options. When your body is healthy, your mind can follow suit.
  • Stay Hydrated
    As the grieving process continues, ensure that you drink water to avoid being dehydrated. Stick to healthier beverages and temporarily stay away from caffeinated drinks. These drinks can make you more alert than usual, and you may not be able to get the physical and emotional rest that you need.
  • Allow Grief to Come
    No matter where you are when the feelings of grief come, don’t hold yourself. Find a place where you can simply pour your heart out. If you’re not comfortable to cry in public, find a restroom where you can just grieve. Talk to your trusted friends. Visit your loved one’s grave if you want to. Acknowledge your grief so you can easily embrace the process.
